about the gay film chemistry epidemic.
well basically i have a lot of thoughts and a few of them are that i was revisiting random rwrb footage yesterday and i could NOT believe how bad their acting was, like i remember watching the movie when it came out and my review on lboxd was literally that the casting was terrible so the takeaway persists but i thought with some time away i might be able to revisit with different goggles... No. nicgal is nothing to write home about tbh but tzp is SOOOO horrendous, i cannot believe it, why on earth did they cast this man. it's actually kind of upsetting to me. we have to do something about the lack of genuine chemistry between gay film leads in 2025
and you know what i don't even care that they're both straight like i think some of the most earnest and genuine work comes from beloved hags in the industry. i'm a big fan of taron hagging for dickmadden oscar hagging for pedro taron also hagging for pedro etc. but the problem is you need to still be a good actor... i need to make a graph connecting all the d-lister eurogay allies who keep getting typecast into gay movies because it's sooo funny that nicgal had better chemistry with FIONN O'SHEA (who tbf is probably actually gay) who was most recently in a film with louis hoff who was in that terrible gay german coming of age film forever ago... and jorge mackay is also always at the scene of the crime. honestly him being straightmarried is actually quite sad to me... he would have made a beautiful bisexual.
but really the point is that if your cast is going to be Bad, you should probably have a gay person. if your cast is going to be Straight, it should have an actor who is both talented and an IRL hag for a messy glass-closeted gay man, because it means they're used to discretion and are capable of channeling their bff's repression. unfortunately rwrb lacks all of this.
i watched boots earlier and the overarching theme is like >wow this is terrible military propaganda, but the cast is kind of fascinating to me because its 4 gay leads shape the cast culture so effortlessly despite the actual show not really having any genuine lasting queer text beyond internal storylines. like imagine your show being centered around chronically online tiktok girlie miles heizerrrr i cannot believe it. also angus is a sweetie... the fact that liam oh is literally the hudson williams (token straight wasian) of the cast is hilarious to me because he's really just along for the ride in that he's not a genuine hag/Conscious Ally Who Has To Engage In Protective Allyship but just some guy they picked up to play the straight himbo supporting role. and he has beautiful face syndrome...
anyway >SPEAKING OF HEATED RIVALRY. so you see.
ok this is the rundown of the game changers series by rachel reid:
#1: new york captain x random barista... very vanilla and boring
#2: 1:1-ish sidovi fanfiction but they're in the same draft class and the rivalry is montreal/boston. what if sid were wasian and gay and from ottawa and ovi had a fucked up family history and his mom killed herself when he was 12 and his father dies of alzheimer's and his brother sucks so he's like fuck it i'm going to become a canadian citizen instead (more on this). it goes from wjc to winning their first cups and culminates in them being like Ok we are in love and i need to get out of boston to make this work. also scott hunter (new york captain) is relevant because he makes out with his bf after winning the cup and that's what convinces ilya to commit to their secret cottage lovers vacation. in the end ilya signs with ottawa even though the team fucking sucks so he can be two hours away from shane and also shane is a pathetic bottoommmmmmmM. he's like "does ilya want to switch? man i sure hope not that would suck." also he buys an entire property in montreal just so he and ilya can fuck on the dl
#3: anxious journeyman enforcer x aspiring musician who he was in love with during their billet days as teenagers. the characters are kind of relevant to the other books because ryan price is briefly on a few of the mcs' teams and he ends up retiring early but is tapped to help coach the hockey summer camps that shane and ilya host as like part of their friendship rehabilitation pr plan in book 6 LMFAO. and his bf is famous and they end up at this gay bar and go to his concert or something
#4: new york goalie x grad student age gap angst... this one seems the most irrelevant. the goalie and his boyfriend do get mentioned in some of the books but they have barely any narrative significance to any of the stories. i think it is the most skippable
#5: problemchild who gets traded to ottawa for calling out his rapist teammate x ottawa social media guy who's just like a nice little local apple farmboy... despite the premise very cloying and it's a lot of like Self-Improvement Guidebook where troy wants to become a more morally upstanding person to deserve harris or whatever. happens simultaneously with #6
#6: official heated rivalry sequel where they've been together secretly for years but basically only shane's family + straight best friend know and ilya is very isolated and struggling with his mental health and starts seeing a russian therapist and there's a lot of obliviousness on shane's behalf who is also struggling with orthorexic tendencies/asceticism as self-harm because they feel like they aren't able to control anything in their lives and he fears getting found out and losing his team and career so much and the secret is killing them and also BETTMAN in this universe is this insane little old man named crowell who's deeply evil and homophobic and vile. and basically they get outed because shane's straight bff on the team does these stupid Cameo videos and doesn't realize they're making out in the mirrored window and they're like oooopsies. yeah we're getting married. Lolkek. but the montreal team is so shitty to shane it breaks his faith in them and in the end he ends up moving to ottawa and they're like ok time to win the rest of our cups here. yayyyy. and also ilya gets a cute dog
if you are going to read this series, you really only need to read 2 > 6 > 5. the rest are superfluous or irrelevant to some degree or another (i have not read them).
anyway the thing about heated rivalry is that it's like, it's Fine. i think rachel reid wrote these books with a lot of love in her heart. it's serviceable hockey smut with varied archetypes and semi-thoughtful world building. but i also just think that fans are doing Too Much with it sometimes, because you'll see people be like ughhhh, i hate that rr didn't explore shane's asianness more, why didn't she talk about his japanese heritage, why was she so coy about his eating disorder etc. and i'm like GIRL are you sure you wanted her to be doing all that???? lmfaoo.
like not that it's through any fault of her own, but she could barely handle the Russia storyline on ilya's behalf and in fact one of my biggest pet peeves about this series is that other russians literally don't exist in this league. how can there not be one other russian teammate of ilya's that he's friendly with??? he just goes through life not speaking russian at all except with his one fwb??? it makes no sense to me. There Are Russians in the NHL. and i just think it's laughable that fans earnestly want her to write about like, shane's experience being a poc in the league when you know these hockey smut books did not have sensitivity readers LMFAOOO and also like, she's made it clear that she didn't intend for shane to have an actual eating disorder and from her framing of his journey with food it's rather clear that she doesn't have a lot of experience differentiating between patterns of disordered eating / orthorexic tendencies and so forth and i'm honestly like thank god she didn't try to do all that. people simply think too highly of authors' capacities in these regards and certain things are better left untouched imo.
also if we're really going there......... as a wasian with a euro name myself i have to be so honest with you, a wasian man named Shane Hollander is not experiencing constant racism in the league to the degree in which these people want it explored like the nhl is very xenophobic, very racist, very colorist etc. but there are obvious nuances and we can be honest about who is most commonly affected (black players especially). even robo who is visibly asian barely gets any of this. but again i do not think Rachel Reid in the hockey smut series Game Changers is the person to explore all of dat
all of this being said i'm so excited for heated rivalry premiere in the name of ACADEMIC YAOI. it comes out the day i fly to texas and i may or may not force tanya to watch it with me. it's going to be the perfect weekend of stars game, seeing her, and going to katseye concert together 💗 faaack what's better than this.
but yes what's endearing to me about hr adaptation is that well first of all jacob tierney getting SOOO into it is hilarious, imagine running letterkenny and canadian hockeybro comedy for years and then being like wait. hold up. i want to do gay hockey smut and he calls her up like please please please i'm on my knees please let me make a tv show for this and then you somehow get a huge budget greenlit i simply cannot believe it. the other endearing part is that they got sophie nélisse (token yellowjackets cast heterosexual) onboard just because she couldn't resist the call of a montreal-centric storyline, and that SCOTT is played by beautiful bisexual xavier dolan bond girl françois arnaud. like is there not sooo much going on here.
but this leaves us with the leads...
the thing about hr leads is that hudson is a freaky straight wasian who lives in vancouver while connor is actually gay and a bottom on top of that. but that's what makes it so much more camp because you're making the straight vancouverite play the pathetic neurotic slut who is always like ohhh ilya please Let Me Be Your Hole (verbatim) while twinky connor has to put on full drag to cosplay gruff russian top. also he's literally from texas and grew up in socal... YOU CANNOT MAKE THIS UP.
i'm very skeptical about the quality of his incoming russian accent because they had an interview where he was like lol i only got 2 weeks of accent/dialect training, which idk but TO ME SOUNDS KIND OF BAD. but also he has a short where he speaks french and his accent is shockingly good, like genuinely actually really decent and on point, and it kind of pisses me off. what depths does this man have hidden........ why is he an ic3peak stan.
the point is that i don't think they're particularly good actors but they do have matching sex sells tattoos and are kind of semi-decent at playing the PR game even if i find hudson's 4th wall breaching uncouth. nevertheless i am looking forward to my post-thanksgiving entertainment and will return with more thoughts briefly. amen
