caihongthis was not supposed to be very long, but i ended up writing 633 words for this jukyu cc submission and decided it was good enough to post here as well. the title is thanks to the dearest, most wonderful ki, who caught my drift when i wrote the last line of this drabble. enjoy!

It’s stupid. Juyeon knows he’s acting a fool right now, but he can’t help it. It’s not his fault he was built this way, all sensitive, a chronic over-thinker, and fine-tuned to attend to every one of Changmin’s actions.
His boyfriend hasn’t opened his birthday present from him yet. The box has been sitting by his bedside table for the past week untouched and Juyeon is losing his mind. When he’d given the gigantic box to him the day before his big birthday bash organised by yours truly, Changmin had forgone opening it to make out with Juyeon for another fifteen minutes and amidst birthday celebrations, the rest of the week has fallen victim to Changmin’s endless showcases and the respective practice sessions that have eaten up his time. Juyeon swears he hasn’t seen him for more than three hours a day.
So yes, he’s sulking just a little bit.
It’s nothing big—just a gigantic Chucky doll, the one that Changmin has been eyeing since they went to that freaky gift shop last year that gave Juyeon nightmares for days.
He ventured back there the week before his boyfriend’s birthday and kept up an uncomfortable conversation about the sentience of preserved organs with the owner of the store before grabbing the doll and running back to the car as fast as he could. And his boyfriend hasn’t opened it yet. Might as well throw the thing out at this point.
Okay he’s being a bit dramatic, but when Changmin comes home late for the nth time that week, Juyeon loses it.
“Changmin, do you love me?” Juyeon says from the bed, putting his book down with his back against the headboard as his boyfriend slips on a pair of shorts and Juyeon’s old basketball sweatshirt. Changmin turns to him and his eyebrows knit together.
“Why are you asking me that?” Changmin eyes him suspiciously as he crawls into bed, again completely ignoring the box on the bedside.
“Do you love me?” Juyeon asks again, impatient and Changmin has the gall to laugh at him before he leans in close to Juyeon’s face, his hands creeping towards his waist.
“I do you big oaf, now what’s got you in such a mood?”
“The box. By your bed. My birthday present to you that you haven’t opened for an entire week.” Juyeon points accusingly at the wrapped present as if it’s its fault for Juyeon’s irrational upset and Changmin looks at the box, back at Juyeon, then back at the box.
“Babe you know I’ve been busy, plus I know what it is already, so I didn’t feel the urge to open it.” Changmin says nonchalantly, finding purchase in Juyeon’s t-shirt.
“I thought you wanted the Chucky doll for ages!” Juyeon bursts and the way Changmin illuminates like a damn Christmas tree is one part adorable and three parts irritating.
“YOU GOT ME THE DOLL?!” Changmin all but screeches and tears at the box on his right until he sees the face of the doll and screams again.
“What did you think I got you?!” Juyeon yells back and Changmin looks at him and slams a wet kiss on his mouth.
“A Nerf gun! Because I said I wanted to terrorise everyone at Kevin and Chanhee’s housewarming party next week!”
“You’re impossible,” Juyeon says fondly to himself, more dazed by the shift in Changmin’s actions rather than frustrated at his boyfriend’s assumption.
Changmin screams a bit more, crying at how adorable the terrifying thing is, kisses Juyeon again before ruffling the doll’s hair. When Juyeon goes to flip the switch, eager to spoon with his boyfriend now that his initial despair has washed away, he comes face to face with a thing of nightmares.
“CAN’T YOU PUT HIM NEXT TO YOU INSTEAD OF BETWEEN US?!”
