Younghoon is in the middle of making a cheese toastie when Jacob calls his name from the living room. He washes his hands after putting his bread in the sandwich press and walks over.
"What's up?"
"Have you heard of Sternberg's Theory of Love?" Jacob asks, flicking aimlessly through his textbook.
"Here to psycho-analyse me again Cobie?" Younghoon says accusatorily and Jacob drops his book in his lap, offended.
"I would never." Younghoon gives him a look that makes him stand down and twiddle his thumbs guiltily.
"Okay sorry! I just think it's really interesting," Jacob says quietly, and Younghoon squeezes onto the couch and pushes Jacob over with his hip.
"Fine, hit me." A beep from the kitchen interrupts Jacob before he can even start and Younghoon jumps up to grab his food.
"Okay, now you can talk." He takes a bite of his sandwich and marvels at the cheese pull before Jacob pinches him in the arm, demanding his attention.
"So there's intimacy, passion, and commitment. Three of these combined give you consummate love and is the most ideal situation, but the absence of one or two or all, give you a whole range of combinations," Jacob explains with animated hands. Younghoon is slightly endeared.
"Non-love is what you have with an acquaintance. No intimacy, passion, or commitment. Like..." Jacob pauses, trying to come up with an example and Younghoon answers him.
"Like Sangyeon." Jacob looks at him and nods, pleased.
"Exactly! He's your boss and maybe you guys hang out once in a while for dinners, but you're not doing anything more than that." Younghoon makes a sound of understanding and beckons Jacob to continue.
"Infatuation is when there's only passion, like love at first sight."
"So... Sunwoo?" Younghoon says after pondering for a minute. Jacob gasps.
"You were head over heels for Sunwoo?!"
"Hey! He was cute as hell back then!" Younghoon defends and Jacob furrows his brows before continuing.
"Just intimacy gives you liking, so a close friendship."
"Juyeon?"
"Sure. Next is empty love, which is only commitment and leads to stagnant relationships."
"I don't really remember..." Younghoon answers and Jacob looks at him again.
"Kevin?" he proffers and Younghoon winces. Right.
"I guess so." Not a relationship he remembers all too well, or fondly. They're friends now, but when they were more than that, it's not a time Younghoon likes to reminisce often.
"What about passion and commitment? That gives you fatuous love," Jacob says quickly, and Younghoon finds an easy answer to that.
"Chanhee." One for the books, Younghoon thinks to himself. Jacob nods in agreement before he pulls the next one out of his memory. Younghoon has finished his bread now, and settles for leaning his back on the armrest so he can face Jacob properly.
"Romantic love, the combo between passion and intimacy. What they call a summer fling." Jacob says, giving Younghoon a knowing look.
"What?" Younghoon coughs out and Jacob stares at him, deadpan.
"It's been years now, you don't have to be so embarrassed."
"It's just weird because he's dating someone else now!" Younghoon whines and Jacob rolls his eyes.
"When Changmin and Kevin ultimately get married, you're going to be the guy at the wedding who boned both grooms," Jacob comments, far too amused for Younghoon's liking.
"Shut up." Jacob mimics zipping his lips shut before he refers back to his textbook.
"Aha! Okay the second last one is companionate love."
"Intimacy and commitment?" Younghoon guesses and Jacob gives him a thumbs up, paired with a wide grin.
"Bingo. I feel like for you it has to be..." they both pause for a minute before coming to the same conclusion.
"Jaehyun," they say in unison and Younghoon gives Jacob a hi-five that he reciprocates just as enthusiastically.
"I mean, he'd be mine too so," Jacob explains with a shrug and Younghoon figures that that's true. Jaehyun is their best friend, through and through. Their unspoken third even if he hates to admit it.
"Last one now, is consummate love. Hmm..." Jacob taps his pen against his chin and Younghoon snorts, sitting up straight to hit Jacob lightly in the thigh.
"Was this one big set-up just so I could call you my consummate love?" Younghoon drawls and Jacob shrugs again, blinking coquettishly up at Younghoon when he crawls over and into Jacob's lap.
"I don't know. Am I your consummate love?" Jacob asks, answering his own question as he puts his hands on Younghoon's waist like they've always belonged there. Younghoon can't help but smile.
"Yes and I'll tell you a hundred times if it'll get you to stop looking so coy." Jacob feigns innocence and Younghoon pinches his cheek.
"Now when did you get so smooth Jacob Bae?" He leans down, caging Jacob in between his arms.
"Sometimes, being a complete nerd comes in handy," Jacob says nonchalantly and Younghoon laughs out loud, boisterous when he buries his head in Jacob's shoulder, falling completely into Jacob's hands.
"I didn't know nerds had game," Younghoon says into Jacob's neck teasingly. Jacob blows into his ear in contempt.
"I don't know, this nerd might just change your mind."
